Buildroot in Practice
The lighter alternative to Yocto: when Buildroot is the right call and how to use it well.
Who this course is for
Engineers choosing or running Buildroot for smaller products — who need an honest picture of what it does well, and the discipline to keep a Buildroot-based product maintainable.
Prerequisites
Course outline
Day 1 — The Buildroot model
- How Buildroot differs from Yocto: no binary packages, no sstate, one tree
- Kconfig configuration and defconfigs
- The build flow: toolchain, packages, rootfs, images
- BR2_EXTERNAL trees for keeping your work out of the fork
- Build artefacts: where per-package directories and output live
Day 2 — Packages and toolchains
- The package infrastructures: generic, autotools, cmake, meson
- Writing a package .mk and Config.in for your own software
- Patching packages and keeping the patch stack reviewable
- Toolchain choices: internal build, external toolchain, SDK generation
- Legal-info output and what it gives you for free
Day 3 — Rootfs assembly and honest comparison
- Filesystem overlays and permission/device tables
- Post-build and post-image scripts: where product policy lives
- Users, init system selection and skeleton customisation
- Rebuild cost reality: full vs incremental and the make pitfalls
- Buildroot vs Yocto for real projects: team size, update strategy, compliance and lifecycle
Hands-on labs
Labs follow the academy model — 35% principles, 20% guided investigation, 45% engineering studio. Every claim you make in a lab is backed by a trace, a counter or a measurement you captured yourself. How we teach
- Lab: Build a defconfig for a QEMU target and boot the result; then rebuild it for the lab board's architecture
- Lab: Add a new package with generic-package, patch it, and prove the patch applied in the per-package build directory
- Lab: Assemble a product rootfs with an overlay, a permission table and a post-build script; verify the result on the target
- Lab: Generate an SDK and build a userspace application against it outside the Buildroot tree
- Lab: Time a clean build vs an incremental change, then measure the same change in an equivalent Yocto build and write up the comparison
Capstone project
Produce equivalent minimal images for the same target in Buildroot and (with provided scaffolding) Yocto: same packages, same init behaviour, same custom application — then deliver both images, the provenance and legal-info output for each, measured rebuild timings and a one-page decision record stating which system you would ship and why.
What you leave with
- A working Buildroot build with your own package and overlay
- Defconfig and BR2_EXTERNAL discipline for a clean tree
- SDK generation and external application builds
- A measured, not tribal, Buildroot-vs-Yocto comparison
- Legal-info output as the start of your compliance story
How it runs
Every course follows the same model: 35% principles, 20% guided investigation, 45% engineering studio. You leave with working code, raw measurements and an evidence-based report — not a certificate of attendance. Read the methodology or see a full sample lesson.
Material is adapted to your kernel version, hardware and workload before a private delivery. For public cohorts, the environment is provided and configured.
Questions
Who is this course for?
Engineers choosing or running Buildroot for smaller products — who need an honest picture of what it does well, and the discipline to keep a Buildroot-based product maintainable. It sits at practitioner level within the Embedded Linux & BSP track.
What do I need to know already?
Specific prerequisites for this course: Linux command line and build tooling; Basic cross-compilation concepts; No prior Buildroot experience required. We confirm levels before the cohort starts and adapt if a group is stronger or weaker than expected.
Can this run privately for my team?
Yes. Any course runs on-site at your offices anywhere, or live online for a distributed team, with labs adapted to your hardware and codebase.
What is the difference between in-person and online?
In person is 3 full days with hardware on your desk, capped at 14. Online is 6 half-day sessions across about two weeks so you can keep working, capped at 20, with remote lab access.
Do you invoice companies?
Yes. Purchase orders are accepted and invoicing is available in USD, EUR, GBP, SAR and CAD.
